ART
at The Winterton Federation

At the Winterton Federation, art and design is a vibrant and valued part of school life, where creativity, imagination and self-expression are celebrated. Through inspiring visual, tactile and sensory experiences, children are encouraged to explore the world around them and communicate what they see, feel and think using colour, texture, form and a wide range of materials.

Our art curriculum develops skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and design while nurturing curiosity, confidence and a love of creativity. Children learn together, share ideas and take pride in their work as they explore the work of artists, craft makers and designers from different times and cultures.

Art at Winterton empowers pupils to make informed choices, reflect on their learning and shape their environments creatively. Above all, it enriches children’s lives, helping every learner to grow in confidence and creativity β€” learning together and shining forever.

The core Christian values at Winterton Church of England Infants’ School are Perseverance, Friendship, Joy and Respect. These values underpin our curriculum and enrich all aspects of our pupils’ education. Our curriculum prepares children for the future by developing Healthy and Safe, Trusting, Enterprising and Creative members of the local community. Embedded within our teaching and learning are opportunities for the pupils to understand the meaning and significance of the Christian faith.

At The Winterton Federation, Art and Design embody the highest form of human creativity. We believe the creative and topic-driven teaching should instil in pupils an appreciation of beauty and an awareness of how creativity depends on technical mastery. Therefore, children should learn to draw, paint and sculpt, as well as design and create aesthetically pleasing objects in two and three dimensions. In addition to physical creativity, pupils should learn about the achievements of great artists and designers.

All pupils at Winterton have access to a broad, balanced and enriching Art & Design curriculum through a spiral designed scheme of work with the following key principles in mind:

Cyclical:β€―Pupils return to the key areas again and again during their time at Winterton.

Increasing Depth:β€―Each time a key area is revisited it is covered with greater complexity.

Prior Knowledge:β€―Upon returning to each key area, prior knowledge is utilised so pupils can build upon previous foundations, rather than starting again.

Where possible, key Art & Design & Technology units are allocated into linked curriculum themes or taught as discreet areas.

Ourβ€― curriculum facilitates an understanding that through Art and Design, the resulting work produced can impact through an appreciation for its beauty and/or its emotional expression. Art and Design knowledge encapsulates creative thinking as well as creativity. It embraces evaluative processes, self-improvement and self-expression. These attributes are multi-disciplinary, but developed through Art and Design.
