FRENCH
at The Winterton Federation

Through Kapow French, we inspire pupils to be curious, expressive, and culturally aware, reflecting our commitment to being the beacon for learning. Pupils learn together by exploring new languages, sounds, and creative forms, building confidence and respect for diversity. These subjects nurture creativity, communication, and collaboration, enabling children to shine as expressive individuals and develop a lifelong appreciation of language and the arts.

At The Winterton Federation, our vision is to create a ‘love of language’. Our chosen modern foreign language is French. Children are encouraged to develop an understanding of the world in which we live by having the opportunity to develop their French language skills as well as learn about French culture and traditions. A structured approach to learning French ensures that children can build and consolidate their language skills and use this when new topics are introduced.

Kapow French is designed to inspire pupils’ curiosity and enthusiasm for learning a foreign language while developing the key skills needed for effective communication. The curriculum aims to build pupils’ confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French, alongside an understanding of grammatical structures, phonics, and vocabulary. Cultural awareness is woven throughout, helping pupils to appreciate similarities and differences between their own lives and those of people in French-speaking countries.

The curriculum is delivered through a carefully sequenced spiral approach that revisits and builds upon prior learning. Lessons provide structured opportunities for repetition, retrieval, and practical application, ensuring secure progression in language skills. Teachers are supported through clear lesson guidance, audio resources, and pronunciation support, enabling consistent and confident delivery. Pupils engage in a range of interactive activities that promote accurate pronunciation, meaningful communication, and enjoyment of language learning.

As a result, pupils make strong progress in French and develop the confidence to communicate using an increasing range of vocabulary and grammatical structures. They demonstrate accurate pronunciation, growing independence in reading and writing, and a positive attitude towards languages. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are well prepared for further language learning and approach Key Stage 3 with confidence and enthusiasm.
