Community Engagement
at The Winterton Federation

At the Winterton Federation, civic engagement is at the heart of our community values. We actively encourage our pupils to take part in meaningful experiences that connect them with the wider community. Children regularly visit local places within the village, play board games with residents at local residential homes, and create artwork for local establishments to brighten shared spaces. We take pride in caring for our environment through village litter-picking initiatives and by supporting our local library. Across the federation, we promote strong pupil leadership, empowering children to take on responsibilities and contribute to decision-making. We regularly hold Democracy Days, where pupil voice truly reigns and children learn first-hand about participation and representation. In addition, we support both local and national charities through sponsored events, helping our pupils develop compassion, social responsibility, and an understanding of the positive impact they can have on the world around them.

Pupil Leadership

Pupil leadership at the Winterton Federation plays a vital role in developing confident, responsible and reflective learners. By giving children meaningful opportunities to lead — whether through school councils, eco-groups, peer mentoring, or federation-wide roles — we empower them to understand that their voices matter. Leadership opportunities help pupils build essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, resilience and decision-making, while also strengthening their sense of belonging within the school community. Through initiatives such as Democracy Days, where pupil voice is central to discussions and school development, children learn first-hand about representation, fairness and accountability. Encouraging leadership across the federation ensures that all pupils, regardless of age, have the chance to contribute positively, preparing them not only for the next stage of their education but for active and responsible citizenship beyond the classroom.

Examples of our Leadership positions in school:

Our School Council representatives are members of our school community who embody our Christian Values. They are voted for by their peers in an annual election. The School Council meet every week and represent our pupil voice.

Currently our priorities are:

  • Planning activities that will inspire a love of reading for all children
  • Fundraising to purchase new books and furniture for corridor libraries
  • Improving our school grounds and outside areas

Here is what some of our school councillor’s have said about their experience so far as a representative:

  • “I like being a school councillor because you can make new friends. Together we have really good ideas and we can help make school the best it can be for all the children.”
  • “I like being on school council because we can be creative with our ideas, and sharing them makes the ideas better.”
  • “I like listening to other people’s ideas. We’ve got some good ideas planned for this year!”

This year we have raised money for mental health, Pakistan Floods and now for our four local chosen charities:

Jerry Green Dog Rescue
Mens Sheds
NSPCC
