PE
at The Winterton Federation

The Core Christian values at The Winterton Federation are Joy, Friendship, Perseverance and Respect. These values underpin our curriculum and enrich all aspects of our pupils’ education. Our curriculum prepares children for the future by developing Heathy and Safe, Trusting, Enterprising and Creative members of the local community. Embedded within our teaching and learning are opportunities for the pupils to understand the meaning and significance of the Christian faith.

At The Winterton Federation, we aim to provide a high-quality Physical Education curriculum, that inspires all pupils to become physically active individuals. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Our children have opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed attributes such as fairness and respect. Physical Education at The Winterton Federation is an imperative element of the curriculum, which develops a need for healthy lifestyles, a balanced diet, positive growth mind-set and the resilience to persevere. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

We believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is vital and unique in its contribution to a pupil’s physical and emotional development and health. We cater for a wide range of learning experiences appropriate to pupils’ experiences, ability and maturity.

We endeavour to support all pupils in the development of physical competence and self-confidence. We promote skills necessary to effectively plan and evaluate movement activities, safely and with confidence. The scheme of work is based on progressive learning objectives which, combined with varied and flexible teaching styles, endeavour to provide appropriate, stimulating, challenging and enjoyable learning situations for all pupils to build upon a sense of achievement. The scheme aims to promote an understanding of the many benefits of exercise, through a balanced range of relevant activities. In Early Years and Key Stage 1, PE lessons create a movement foundation to underpin lifelong participation, enabling pupils to access a range of learning experiences which support the development of competent and confident movers. Through adapted physical activities, Years 3 and 4 pupils develop and apply a broad range of skills in different contexts, enhancing their creative, social and thinking skills in PE. They also begin to gain an understanding of the positive benefits of being physically active. Years 5 and 6 pupils learn physical, social and thinking skills through modified sport specific activities, appropriate for their age. They also develop leadership skills and are able to articulate the benefits of regular exercise.

The PE curriculum is taught through the Get Set For PE scheme , which is in-line with the National Curriculum, and is used to aid teaching staff in their subject knowledge and planning of PE lessons. Teachers are able to adjust and change lessons to suit the needs of their classes but the scheme provides a strong basis of what is expected in each year group.

Each class has access to two hours of high-quality physical activity every week, made up of the Active Play, Classroom Fitness and quality teaching of PE. These are either taught by the class teacher or by HLTA’s who have received training and support. To support the teaching of PE across the school, we have a PE Champion and PE Support Leaders who mentor, team teach and demonstrate, which facilitates high-quality PE sessions .

Within each lesson, children are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways and each lesson builds upon the previous skills, allowing them time to embed it. Different skills are recapped throughout, and across, the years, each time they are being built upon; allowing children to know more and remember more whilst building on terminology and vocabulary.

We offer a wide range of sporting after-school clubs run by staff.

At The Winterton Federation, Physical Education is delivered through the Get Set for PE scheme to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in a broad range of physical activities. Our PE curriculum aims to develop physical competence, confidence, and a lifelong love of physical activity, supporting pupils’ health and fitness. Through opportunities to participate in competitive, cooperative, and physically demanding activities, pupils develop important values such as fairness, teamwork, resilience, and respect, helping to build strong character and positive attitudes towards sport and physical wellbeing.

Our intent is to ensure that all pupils lead healthy, active lives by becoming physically active for sustained periods, engaging in competitive sport, and developing the skills and understanding needed to improve performance and achieve personal success.

PE is taught regularly using the Get Set for PE scheme, which provides a structured and progressive curriculum aligned with National Curriculum requirements from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2. Lessons are carefully planned to build on prior learning and develop skills over time, ensuring progression in movement, coordination, teamwork, and performance.

In Key Stage 1, pupils develop fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching, alongside balance, agility, and coordination. They participate in team games, cooperative and competitive activities, and perform simple dances to build confidence and enjoyment in physical activity.

In Key Stage 2, pupils apply and refine a wider range of skills across different sports and activities. They take part in competitive games, athletics, gymnastics, dance, and outdoor and adventurous activities, learning to collaborate, compete, and evaluate their own performance. Pupils are encouraged to compare performances, identify improvements, and work towards achieving their personal best. Teaching is inclusive and adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, ensuring equal access and participation.

The impact of our PE curriculum is that pupils leave our school physically confident, competent, and motivated to lead healthy, active lives. Pupils demonstrate improved physical skills, coordination, and fitness, alongside positive attitudes towards teamwork and competition. By the end of each key stage, pupils:

  • Show competence across a broad range of physical activities
  • Participate confidently in competitive and cooperative sports
  • Are physically active for sustained periods
  • Understand how to improve performance and achieve personal bests and demonstrate values of fairness, respect, and resilience

Impact is evident through pupil engagement, skill development, participation in physical activity, teacher assessment, and pupils’ growing confidence and enjoyment of PE.
