DEVELOPING WIDER LIFE SKILLS
at The Winterton Federation

At The Winterton Federation, we are deeply passionate about developing the wider life skills that help our pupils succeed both in school and beyond it. We believe education should prepare children, not only academically, but also for the challenges and opportunities of everyday life. Throughout our curriculum and wider school offer, we provide opportunities for pupils to build practical, social and critical thinking skills. For example, pupils take part in financial education through lessons from Oak National Academy, develop independence and creativity through cooking within our engineering curriculum and enrichment clubs, and strengthen their confidence and communication through debating across different subjects. By embedding these experiences throughout the school day and beyond, we ensure our pupils grow into thoughtful, capable and well-rounded individuals.

Finance:

We believe that it is important that our pupils learn real life skills and we have a carefully planned programme of enrichment to support this. We have adapted the Oak Academy finance units of work to create lessons that suit our context at both the infant and junior sites. These are carefully planned throughout the year and progress in difficulty and complexity through the year groups. We also invite banking staff and accountants into school to talk about the importance of finance and money.

Cooking:

We see learning to cook, bake and make as essential life skills. Cooking opportunities are carefully planned into our Engineering schemes of work but are supplemented by enrichment projects, enterprise and enhanced opportunities in the Junior school ‘Lighthouse Project’. We use our school calendar of events to plan additional opportunities for pupils to cater for staff, pupils and parents.
