EQUALITY, DIVERSITY and INCLUSION
at The Winterton Federation

We pride ourselves on being welcoming and inclusive schools. For us at The Winterton Federation, equality means that everyone is able to participate and feel welcome and safe in the activities of our schools. This includes pupils, parents, staff, governors and visitors. Everyone should be able to achieve the best possible outcomes as a result of their participation. We believe that equality should permeate all aspects of school life and is the responsibility of all members of the school and community.

At our Federation, diversity means acknowledging that there are differences between people that should be recognised, respected and celebrated. We promote respect of each other’s differences and identities. We celebrate and raise awareness of diversity in the school (particularly with us living in a predominantly white British area) and in the wider community and believe that teaching children about diversity prepares them for life in modern Britain.

At The Winterton Federation, we believe it is essential to provide a well-balanced, challenging curriculum for all pupils. Inclusion looks at the needs of all pupils including children with specific learning difficulties such as ADHD, pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties, EAL pupils (English as an Additional Language) and pupils considered to be more able.

Our aim is to provide all children with the best possible outcomes in preparation for lifelong learning. We believe it is important that children acquire skills, knowledge and confidence that can be applied to all future learning experiences, including social, physical and spiritual development. We endeavour to raise aspirations and expectations for all pupils by working in partnership with parents/carers and listening to our pupils.

At the infant school as a Church of England School, we use the document ‘Valuing All Gods Children’ to help us with our equality policy, but also a range of other policies such as anti-bullying, behaviour, SEND, Accessibility etc.

All schools set Equality Objectives every 4 years and we have reviewed ours in March 2026.

Our Federation is committed to creating a safe and respectful environment where discrimination, harassment and victimisation are not tolerated. We have promoted clear behaviour expectations through our policies, assemblies and PSHE curriculum, ensuring that all pupils understand the importance of respect and inclusion. Staff have received regular training to recognise and respond to discriminatory behaviour, and any incidents are recorded, monitored and addressed promptly. Through these actions, we aim to ensure that every member of our school community feels safe, valued and supported. Our pupil and parental surveys indicate that all pupils feel safe at school.
We have worked hard to ensure that all pupils have equal access to learning, resources and opportunities regardless of their background, ability or personal circumstances. Our curriculum is inclusive and adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and young carers. We have provided targeted support, enrichment activities and engagement with families and the wider community to ensure that all pupils can participate fully in school life and achieve their potential.

Our Federation has actively promoted respect, understanding and appreciation of diversity through our new school values and House system. Through our curriculum, assemblies, themed events and celebration of different cultures and faiths, we have encouraged pupils to value differences and learn from one another. We foster an inclusive school culture where pupils are encouraged to show empathy, kindness and respect, helping to build strong and positive relationships across our diverse school community.
