PSHE
at The Winterton Federation
PSHE, taught through the 1Decision scheme, supports our pupils’ personal development and wellbeing, ensuring we remain a beacon for learning for the whole child. By learning together in a safe and supportive environment, pupils develop emotional literacy, resilience, and the skills needed to build positive relationships and make informed choices. This empowers children to shine forever as confident, respectful, and responsible members of society.
Our vision is a PSHE curriculum that is an important, integral component of the whole curriculum. Therefore, we ensure we promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our children; preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they already face and for adult life. We teach our children about keeping healthy and safe, emotionally and physically; encourage our children to understand how all actions have consequences and how they can make informed choices to help themselves, others and the environment. PSHE enables children to develop the skills and attributes they need to manage life’s challenges and make the most of life’s opportunities.
Through 1Decision, our PSHE curriculum intends to:
- Develop pupils’ emotional literacy, resilience, and self-esteem.
- Support positive mental health and wellbeing, helping children recognise emotions and manage feelings appropriately.
- Teach pupils how to build and maintain healthy relationships, including friendships and family relationships.
- Promote understanding of physical health, personal safety, and healthy lifestyles.
- Encourage pupils to make informed choices and understand the consequences of their decisions.
- Foster values of respect, equality, diversity, and tolerance, preparing pupils for life in modern Britain.
PSHE is taught weekly using the 1Decision scheme, which provides a clearly sequenced and progressive curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of our pupils and are delivered in a safe, supportive learning environment where children feel confident to share ideas and ask questions.
Key features of implementation include:
- Structured lesson plans that ensure consistency and progression across year groups.
- Age-appropriate content, revisited and built upon year by year to deepen understanding.
- Use of videos, stories, discussion, and activities to engage pupils and promote active learning.
- Opportunities for pupils to develop speaking and listening skills through reflection, debate, and collaborative work.
- Clear links to safeguarding, with sensitive topics handled carefully and signposting to trusted adults where needed.
- Adaptations and support to ensure inclusion for all learners, including SEND pupils.
Teachers receive guidance and resources from the 1Decision platform, ensuring confidence in delivery and consistency in key messages. PSHE learning is also reinforced through assemblies, themed days, cross-curricular links, and the wider school ethos.
The impact of PSHE teaching through 1Decision is evident in pupils’ behaviour, attitudes, and understanding of themselves and others. Pupils are able to talk confidently about their feelings, relationships, and choices, using appropriate vocabulary and demonstrating empathy and respect.
By the time pupils leave our school, they:
- Show increased confidence and self-awareness.
- Demonstrate positive relationships and social skills.
- Have a secure understanding of how to stay safe and healthy, both physically and emotionally.
- Are able to make thoughtful and responsible decisions.
- Understand the importance of respect, diversity, and equality.

In Year 3/4, children discussed what makes a space inclusive. They then created their own inclusive classroom and shared their ideas with the class. #PSHE #year3 #year4 #values ... See MoreSee Less
